Gift certificates of $20.00 (for Booklegger and Northtown Books) will be awarded for the best prose piece and best poem.
We only accept electronic submissions.

* In order to email your fiction or prose to Poets & Writers, please save the work in either Microsoft Word or Word
Perfect
(the version does not matter) and attach it to your email.
* Within your word processing document, make sure that the first page of your document contains your name, address, daytime telephone, City/State/Zip, and title of the piece(s) you're submitting. Do not put your name anywhere else in the document.
* Also, with your contact information, make sure to identify if you're a student, faculty, staff, or community member

* The email address to send it to is david-holper@redwoods.edu

3/14 Class 8 1) With your story, turn one copy in to Dave and turn copies also to your small group.
    2) Share and trade books
3) Writing exercise: dealing with sentences and how to modify them.
    4) Journal topic: describe one useful technique that you've gotten out of the class so far and how you've either used it or plan to use.  Also, describe something that you've seen in someone else's writing that you've admired and think about how you might imitate (or better yet steal) that technique as your own.
5) Share BBB quotes and ideas from 64-84.
6) Dave will discuss how to submit your fiction, where to submit it to, and how to deal with the business end of writing.
7) Discuss "Seven Floors."

Homework 1) Read your group's stories and write a one-paragraph comment on each, as well as marking up the text.
2) Using the photograph you shared (or the one that you forgot to share), write a sketch (2-4 pages) in which this image plays a central role.  One possibility is that the story begins by someone looking at the photograph and remembering a time/event.  Another possibility is that the photograph is taken in the course of the story, and it later comes to play some role in remembering.
3) Read "First Love, Last Rites" by Ian McEwan, write a synopsis (as always) on a
3 x 5,  and come ready to talk about memory and image.
    4) Read pp. 64-84 in Bird by Bird and mark up for discussion.

Note:   The above assignments and deadlines are subject to change in the event of extenuating circumstances.
