English 33:

WEEKLY COURSE SCHEDULE:  Week 9

Note: the packet price is $3.25 each.  If you didn't pay this week, make sure to bring it next week.  Otherwise, Dave is stuck with the cost of the class xerox.

3/28 Class 9 1) Dave will hand out the packet of stories to discuss for next week.  He will also hand back those stories that he has read and that are not in the packet (with comments).
2) Journal topic: describe one useful technique that you've gotten out of the class so far and how you've either used it or plan to use.  Also, describe something that you've seen in someone else's writing that you've admired and think about how you might imitate (or better yet steal) that technique as your own.
    3) Holden Caulfieldisms
    4) Discuss "First Love, Last Rites" and Dave will collect synopses.
5) Share the photograph exercises that you wrote in small groups
6) Share the stories that you read in small groups (leaving out those that have been picked for the packet--next week's discussion).

Homework 1) Read the stories in the packet and write a one paragraph comment on each, as well as mark up the story.
2) Go to a cafe or some other public place and with your writer's notebook (without getting caught) sit close enough that you can overhear a conversation and record it.  Don't expect to catch everything.  Fill in the gaps later, and do get a look at some point at the people you're listening o so that you can add in a physical description later.
3) From the bare bones of the conversation that you overheard, write a two-four page sketch in which this overheard conversation plays a role.  Bring five copies to class.
4) Read "The Distance of the Moon" in your booklet, p. 86 and come prepared to discuss the story, especially in terms of desiring what we can't or shouldn't have.
5) If your story was not selected for the packet, based on the feedback you received from the group and Dave, write a revision.  This is due at Class 9.

Note:   The above assignments and deadlines are subject to change in the event of extenuating circumstances.
