Journal 6 Format
Remember, your goal here is
to write three arguable topic sentences, organize them in emphatic order (and
add a transition to begin each one); then type up the two-three quotes from your
reading for each body paragraph that you'll include in your essay. Then
type this up for Wed. Make sure to save a copy for yourself
(to write with) and then turn in a copy to Dave as Journal 6.
(Remember, you need a thesis
that offers both your opposition and your position.) Example: Although some people argue that we should
not have manmade space exploration, the reality is that robotic space
exploration will only take us so far, and if we want to fire the imagination of
coming generation, we will need to venture out into the unknown.
(Start with a transition and
follow it with your claim) Example: First, the benefit of
manned spaced exploration is that we will learn and invent a great deal of new
technology in doing so. (I’m only
showing you one topic sentence, but you will have three)
(Utilize two-three quotes per
paragraph in your argument.) 1) According
to NASA Mars Exploration Coordinator Sally Jones, “When the US set a goal of
getting to the moon in the late 1950s, there was an
enormous growth in technological advance. The microprocessor industry was largely a
result of learning how to miniaturize circuitry for the moon shot.”
Second
quote by Sally Jones. 2) “Even with the two Space Shuttle disasters,
we learned an enormous amount about what technical mistakes not to make again,
which in the long run will save lives.”
3) Technical expert Bob
Winston testified before Congress in 1995 that “although the price to go Mars
will be high, we will forced to solve the three major problems of space
exploration (speed, radiation, and bone deterioration), which, if we can do it,
will provide the stepping stones to all future space exploration.”
