Unit Test 1: Part A (Identifying Subjects & Verbs)

Read the following points in your Bedford Handbook before you start the exercises:

A) 21A (standard verb forms)

B) 21B (cross out intervening material)

C) 21C (subjects joined by “and”)

D) 64a (prepositional phrases)

Also, make sure to try out some of the practice problems online with the Hacker website  (Dave’s email is david-holper@redwood.edu for the login).  Then go to Grammar basics and do the exercises under Verbs and Subjects.

Directions: start by crossing out the prepositional phrases.  Then underline and label (above the line) the subject (s) and the verb (v). 

 

1)   Lawrence, the odd little man with a blue beard, lived in rickety house down in the glen.

 

2)   Drinking and smoking have been two tempting habits.

 

3)   Into the middle of the dark, lonely woods marched that little girl.

 

4)   Within the darkened room, we found a casket of gems.

 

5)   They have moved to a little place on the seashore. 

 

1)   With a stroke of my pen, I will have made Hermione disappear.

 

2)   The book with the many colors on the cover stood on the shelf.

 

3)   In another week or so, I may have seen Bob and Larry, those vegetables, at the party.

 

4)   The only truly consistent people are the Dead, the Grateful Dead.
