Unit Test 1: Part B (Identifying Types of Clauses)

Points to read up on in your Bedford Handbook before you start on the practice problems:

65A (Simple sentences, compound sentences, and complex sentences)
14A (review of coordination and subordination)

Note: at a minimum, you should know your FANBOYS and what they do, as well as memorize the subordinate conjunctions on p. 188 (under #1 at the top of the page) and also know what they do, too.

Again, you’ll
want to try out some of the practice problems online with the Hacker website  (Dave’s email is david-holper@redwood.edu for the login).  Then go to Clear Sentences and try the section on Subordination.  Then try the two sections under Grammar Basics called Subordinate Clauses

Practice Problems: Underline the ICs and DCs and label them.  Also mark the subordinate conjunctions as SC and coordinating conjunctions as CC.

1)    I went to the store.

2)    Karen walked off the cliff, but Harry did not follow her.

3)    I know the boy who picks his nose.

4)    After all is said and done, it's probably easier to be rich than to be poor.

5)    We went to the market in a hurry, but Michael went in a Chevy.

6)   If you want to be rich, don't bag groceries for a living.

7)  After the car began to tip over the cliff, Michelle screamed, which caused everyone to panic.
