Directions: Find the one comma splice or run-on sentence in each passage, and correct it.  Be sure that you demonstrate a variety of the four correction methods at least once in this section of the test.  You will need to change punctuation and some wording, but try to keep the meaning of the original passage.

 

1)      The difficult thing about living in Humboldt County in this day and age is making a living.  Most of the job here are difficult to find they don’t pay that much either.

 

2)      Many young people finish college and move out of the area, moreover, they don’t come back until they have the training to find good jobs here.

 

3)      As a result, some people turn to growing marijuana others turn to crime, but many people simply struggle along working the minimum wage jobs available in the service industry.

 

4)      Some folks get so fed up with looking for jobs, they start their own businesses, this is how many of our local entrepeneurs got started.

 

5)      The population of Humboldt County is growing every year because housing prices are relatively affordable for people who are selling their houses and moving up from San Francisco, LA, or San Diego, there are still about the same number of jobs.

 

6)      Along with this rising population, there is increasing pressure on housing prices, both for rentals and for purchase, however, locals often find themselves unable to afford these rising prices.

 

7)      In fact, the odd thing is that rental prices are often higher than mortgage prices this leaves the lower class in a difficult bind.

 

8)      The Board of Supervisors wants more affordable housing, but this doesn’t seem to have affected the prices or the availability of housing.

 

9)      Many industries have come and given Eureka a look, these include power generation, water, natural gas, and others, but none has decided to stay.

 

10)  If there is a solution, it hasn’t arrived yet we can only hope that the situation for housing and jobs improves.
