With in-text citations, makes sure to cite the author and page number in one of the two following ways (see pp.594-595 #1 & 2 in your Bedford Handbook):

    Author cited in the lead- in to the quote: Hemingway writes that "Krebs went to war from a Methodist college in Kansas" (319).

    Author not cited in the lead-in: The story begins with the narrator telling us that "Krebs went to war from a Methodist college in Kansas" (Hemingway 319).

    You're welcome to use paragraph #s instead of page numbers:

We learn that one the policemen "chopped Mr. Chiu's hand" with a pistol butt" (par. 22).

    If the quote ends in a question mark or an exclamation point, observe the following conventions:

The protagonist asks the guard, "You mean I'll stay in here tomorrow?" (Jin 173). (question in the narration)

What does the narration mean when Fenjin states, "Mr. Chiu was an ugly man" (176)? (writer's question about the narration)
