ENGLISH 41 PEER TUTORS
Week 1:
8/25:
Class 1: Welcome. General introduction to tutoring, Eng. 41,
and tutors; Review of syllabus; Explanation of additional class observations
and interview requirements. Discussion of scheduling tutoring times in Writing
Center (WC).
HW: 1)
This week, buy your materials
2)
fill out tutoring schedule and submit it by the end of the week.
3) Observe one Writing Center orientation this
week.
4) Reread all introductory materials about Eng. 41 and
the Writing Center.
8/27:
Class 2: Class meeting at the Writing Center. Meet Leslie Leach, the manager of the
Writing Center. Introduce Writing Center tasks. Review non-tutoring responsibilities handout and initial peer
tutor tasks in first weeks of semester.
HW: 1)
Attend 2 Eng. 350 classes and also interview a 350 instructor by the end of
week 4.
Make sure to take notes on what you observe and also make sure to have the
instructor initial your form.
2) Write journal #1.
This is described in the booklet.
It's due on Friday, 9/3
3) During Week 2, read AThe Tutoring Process: Paradigms and Practices@ (in the class
booklet) in preparation for class 6.
Week 2 Writing Center Opens This Week:
Note:
At this point you should be mostly shadowing senior tutors. If you do tutor, remember to keep it basic
by asking to see the student's assignment, reading the paper aloud, sticking to
the hierarchy, keeping a record of your session, and not trying to fix
everything.
9/1 Holiday for Class 3
9/3 Class 4: Share journal 1 with
each other and turn in. Discuss Writing
Center orientation materials. Review tutor job description and responsibilities
and professional conduct in the WC.
Explain Eng. 350 basic skills students and their curriculum. Explain weekly dialogue journal and
record-keeping responsibilities. What makes a good tutor? Discuss four major
principles of tutoring. Last minute
suggestions for 1st week in the WC.
HW: 1)
Memorize the hierarchy of concerns (I will quiz you on this on Monday!). It's in the
booklet.
2) Read chapters 1 & 2 in BGWT (the tutoring book)
for Mon. 9/8
Week 3 Tutoring
Sessions Begin This Week
Note: Make sure to wear your badge in the WC and
keep accurate records of your tutoring
9/8 Class 5: Quiz on the
hierarchies. What is meant by being
professional? What are the general
steps in a tutoring session? What is
the hierarchy of concerns? What tutors can and can=t do and Why Focus on the Assignment? (See handouts.)
HW: 1)
Write Journal 2 for Friday.
2) Remember to complete your two 350 class visits and
interview by the end of week 4.
3) Review the article "Paradigms and
Practices" (in the booklet) for Friday.
9/10 Class 6: Discuss AParadigms and Practices.@ What are the steps in the
writing process? How are those steps
opportunities to tutor? What are Langan=s
four bases for evaluating writing? Do
exercises applying four bases to student paragraphs.
HW: 1)
Read chapters 3 & 4 in BGWT.
Week 4
9/15 Class 7: Review hierarchy of concerns, steps in writing
process, and Langan=s four bases.
Discuss chapters 3 & 4 in BGWT.
Do mock tutoring session with paragraphs lacking coherence. Review
paragraph conference guide.
HW: 1)
Remember to complete additional requirements sheet by the end of the week.
2) Write Journal 3 for Wed. 9/17
9/17 Class 8: Turn in your 350 class observation and interview
sheets. Turn in journal 3. Veteran tutors visit class with helpful
hints, wisdom, and strategies for survival.
Week 5
9/22 Class 9: Share your WC problems and successes. How much of a
sentence skills expert should a peer tutor be?
Define sentence skill responsibilities of peer tutors (handout: What a
Writing Tutor Does). Strategies for
avoiding proofreading. Discuss results of Eng. 350 observations and interviews.
Discuss procedures for observations of faculty and senior tutors in the Writing
Center.
HW: 1) Observe a Writing Center instructor or senior
tutors in preparation for journal #5
2) Journal 4
is due Wed. 9/24.
9/24 Class 10: Share journal 4 and
turn in. Continue with sentence skills
review and responsibilities. Explanation of the structure of expository
paragraph (ts, ss=s, details, transitions, concluding sentence) and how
that knowledge of structure helps in a tutoring session.
HW: 1) Read AFreud in the Writing Center@ for class 12.
Week 6
9/29 Class 11: Share WC experiences. Is your record-keeping accurate
and complete? Discuss tutoring techniques from BGWT: promoting dialogue through
the use of silence, questioning and facilitation. (See handout.)
HW: 1)
Write journal #5 for Wed. 10/1.
2) Continue to observe instructors and senior tutors.
3) Plan to observe an Eng. 150 class next week in lieu
of meeting for class 13.
10/1 Class 12: Share Journal 5 and
turn in. Explain the professional
journal assignment and report to class (see handout). Discuss AFreud in Writing Center@ essay. Report to class about
observations of WC staff. Eng.150 class
observation explanation.
HW: 1) Article presentations from
professional journals will begin in week 8, so begin reading
through articles in the WC to find
the article that you'd like to present on..

In Week 7, remember that you're going to be observing an English 150
class. The

Week 7
10/6 Class 13: canceled to allow for Eng.
150 class observations.

6 and turn in. Turn in Eng. 150
observation handout. Share WC
experiences. Report on Eng. 150 observations. Review rhetorical features of
examples, cause/effect, and, especially, narrative paragraphs and how to
evaluate them. Role play how to tutor a narrative paragraph.

Read "Minimalist Tutoring" in class booklet for class 16.
Week 8
Observation
of tutoring begins.
10/13 Class 15: Eng. 150 instructor visits class. Discuss Eng. 150
curriculum. Share WC experiences.
Discuss pro=s and con=s
of minimalist tutoring.
HW: 1)
Write journal 7 for Wed., 10/15.
10/15 Class 16: Share journal
7 and turn in. Article presentation
begins. Discuss listening techniques. Why is it so difficult to really listen?
Take listening self-assessment, and review personal checklist of listening
behaviors. Role play listening
behaviors. Review observation criteria.
Discuss "Minimalist Tutoring."
HW: 1)
Read "Collaboration and Ethics" for class 18.
Week 9
10/20 Class 17: Share WC experiences.
Discussion of writing process paper due week 11. Discuss heuristics from chapter 4 BGWT and
strategies to help with invention. (
See handout.). Define and identify subjects, verbs, IC, DC, and prepositional
phrases.
HW: 1) Write journal 8 for Wed., 10/22.
2) Begin your Writing Process Paper
with a freewrite, a cluster, or some other introductory step.
10/22 Class 18: Article presentation.
Discuss collaboration vs. minimalist vs. affective tutoring styles. What style of tutoring do you prefer? What
styles have you observed in the WC?
What does it mean to act professionally in the WC?
HW: 1)
Read "Engaging in Dialogue" for class 20.
2)
Write a shitty first draft of your Writing Process Paper.
Week 10
10/27 Class
19: Share WC experiences. Article presentation. Analyze transcripts of two different
tutoring sessions (Murray and Garrison). Definition of basic essay and its
essential components and their functions.
Examine bare bones structure of essay with particular attention to the
role of topic sentences.
HW: 1)
Write journal 9 for class 20.
2) Revise your shitty first draft into a reasonable
first draft this week for your Writing Process Paper.
10/29 Class 20: Discuss strategies for engaging in dialogue. Define and identify independent and
dependent clause and phrase. Do practice exercises. Look at grammar
refresher handout and punctuation pattern handout.
HW: 1)
Finish your first draft of your Writing Process Paper and begin getting
feedback from other peer tutors.
2)
Read essay on AMulti-sensory Tutoring@ for class 22 .
Week 11
11/3 Class 21: ESL expert will visit our class.
HW: 1)
Journal 10 is due at class 22.
2) Finish peer tutor feedback on the Writing Process
Paper.
3)
Revise your final draft of the paper, gather together all the drafts, notes,
tutor feedback sheets, and get ready to turn it in for class 22.
11/5 Class 22: Turn in journal
10. Share papers in small groups and
turn in. Article presentation. What is the role of technology in the
WC? Look at Purdue OWL. Discuss pro=s and con=s of OWL=S,
online tutoring, grammar hotlines, and Internet linkups in the WC. Discuss multi-sensory tutoring
techniques.
HW: 1) Read chapters 5 and 6 in BGWT for
class 24.
Week 12
11/10 Holiday Class 23
HW: 1)
Write Journal #11.
11/12 Class 24: Share Journal 11 and turn in. Article presentation. Introduce glossing technique to support
revision, organization, and development.
Apply techniques to actual student papers.
HW: 1)
Read essay on co-dependency for class 26.
Week 13
11/17 Class 25: Explanation of competency exam process. How can peer tutors help students prepare
for the competency exam? Practice
evaluating competency exams at Eng. 150 and 350 level.
HW: 1)
Write journal 12 for class 26.
2)
Read chapters 7 and 8 in BGWT.
11/19 Class 26: Share journal 12 and turn in. Article presentation. Discuss co-dependency essay. Review glossing
applications. In-class tutoring session
with tutor=s essays.
HW: 1) Read essay ACan
Grammar Be Taught?@ for class 28.
Week 14
11/24 Class 27: Share WC experiences.
Article presentation. What are
strategies for handling difficult students? More competency exam evaluations.
HW: 1) Write journal #13 for class 28.
11/26 Class 28: Wrap up.
Week 15
End-of-semester
conferences and results of observations.
Evaluation of Eng. 41 and tutoring experience. Bring tutor typography
and journal 14 to tutor conferences.
