I) Texts & Materials
A) The
Bedford Guide for Writing Tutors 3rd edition (required) by Leigh Ryan
B) A
binder for the class packet, your journals, etc.
C) English
Skills (recommended) by John Langan (Eng. 350 text)
II) Objectives
A) Develop effective tutoring techniques that would
include the following skills:
i)
Listening
ii)
Questioning
iii)
Empathizing
iv)
Evaluating written work
v)
Recommending strategies to improve reading and writing
III) Basic Mandatory
Requirements
A) Attendance
of 85% of seminar classes (Translation: If you miss 4 classes, your grade
will drop 10 points. If you miss 5
classes, you will fail the class.)
B) Tutoring
in the Writing Center (mandatory 3 hours a week, 37.5 house for the
semester at the assigned times to receive 1 unit of lab time.) Contact the Writing Center as soon as
possible if you cannot make an assigned tutorial hour.
C) Class
participation, very important in a seminar class
IV) Grading
A) Weekly journal 30%
B) Report to class and summary of a professional journal
article(s) 10%
C) Tutoring: evaluations, maintenance of tutoring
paperwork and folder, and
effort and reliability as a tutor 40%
D) Writing process paper 10%
E) Three class observations, one Eng. 350 instructor
interview, one WC orientation
observation, and at least two
tutoring observations in the WC 10%
