THE TIMED WRITING PROCESS

for the Midterm and Final

 

 I) Reading the story: 10 minutes approx.

      A) Read to understand the writer's theme and how it's developed

      B) Hi-light three-five quotes for use in your essay

C) Write and take quick notes to yourself in the column that will be useful in writing

D) Read the question(s) carefully so you're sure you know what your task is as a writer. 

 

II) Prewriting: 5-10 minutes approx.

      A) Choose your method of prewriting (formal outline, cluster, etc.)

      B) Write a one-two sentences thesis, which answers the question

      C) Develop ideas/examples that support your thesis

      D) Develop a sequence for presentation

      E) Construct transitions to bridge between thoughts/paragraphs

 

III) Writing: one hour (maximum)

      A) Using QQISA, write an opening paragraph

               i) Within opening paragraph (or next paragraph, mention author's full

                     name and the story title)

      B) Write body paragraphs

               i) Make sure to tie back to original text with quotes and ideas

               ii)

      C) Using AHEQI, write a conclusion

      D) Write a title for your essay

 

IV) Revising: 5-10 minutes

      A) Reread for basic clarity

               i) Check sentence syntax (word order)

               ii) See if any words are missing

      B) Check paragraph unity

               i) Does the paragraph follow the topic sentence?

               ii) Is the example or idea fully developed?

      C) Check to see your pages are numbered and in order
