UL    Understanding Literature    


Class  8/26 Welcome.  Introductions.  General introduction to the class, requirements, and the contemporary era.  
   
    Homework  1)  Buy and organize materials
2) Journal 1: Describe what you think are three ideas, events, or innovations that significantly shaped the world we live in from 1945 to the present.
3) Read "Happy Endings" (handout) by Margaret Atwood.
 Class  8/28 1) Quiz on "Happy Endings"
2) Share journals
3) Discuss ideas, events, or innovations that shaped the second half of the 20th Century.
4) Discuss "Happy Endings" and what makes it contemporary.
5) Define types of irony
 Homework  1) Read "The Narrator and Point of View" on pp. 121-124 (only up until "Gender and Point of View" (UL)
2) Also read "Setting", "New Historicism" and "Stories about Setting" on pp. 68-69
3) Read "Paul's Mistress" by Guy De Maupassant, p. 83 (UL), paying particular attention to the differences in narrative style, point of view, etc., compared to "Happy Endings."
4) Journal 2: What is one key difference in the way these stories are told?  How does this affect the reader's understanding of the characters, events, etc.  Which of these styles do you prefer and why?
