Mendocino:

Words of Humor and Wisdom Echo Through College of the Redwoods"Good Words," a reading of prose and poetry offered twice a year by College of the Redwoods Mendocino, will take place in the CR Mendocino Library on November 14 at 5 p.m. This will be the fifth "Good Words" reading at which 75 different writers have appeared over the last two years. Writers come mainly from the college's creative writing classes, but also include staff and faculty members. Age range of the poets and writers is 18 to 80-plus. Suzanne Byerley, CR creative writing instructor, has also added a bit of music to the program which is open and free to the public. Coffee and cookies will be available.

On January 30 and 31, 2002, the Mendocino Coast Writers' Conference will sponsor the first in a new series of events called Soundings. Lynne Barrett, acclaimed short story writer and author of The Secret Names of Women, will give a free reading on the evening of January 30, and a two hour workshop the next morning. Many writers will remember Barrett from the 2000 Writers' Conference when her readings and classes were standing room only.

This year's conference, scheduled for June 6, 7, and 8, will feature environmentalist prize-winner, Ellen Meloy, author of Raven's Exile; short story writer, Charlotte Bacon; poets, Robert MacDowell and Terry Ehret; local novelist and memorist, Eleanor Cooney and many others.

Three CR writers who have recently published books, Charles Lee, Secrets of a Rocket Scientist, Leah Leopold, A Long Way From Eighth Street, and Laurel Moss, Watching Dandelions, held a reading and book signing at CR on October 18, and on September 23, CR hosted a reading with music in honor of those who died in the Trade Center tragedy, "A Glow Through Ashes." It featured 16 poets and writers, as well as clarinetist, Eric Van Dyke, and jazz singer, Sallie Wells. Fifty people attended and took solace from this event.
