Course Name

Description

AJ-1 An introductory course about the criminal justice system. Topics include the history and philosophy of justice as it evolved throughout the world; roles and role expectations of criminal justice agents in their interrelationships in society; concepts of crime causation, punishments and rehabilitation; ethics; and education for workers in the criminal justice system.
AJ-10Survey of history and operation of juvenile justice system and its component parts. Topics include classes of juvenile offenders and victims, diversion programs, theories of juveline behavior, the juvenile justice process, and a comparison of the audult and juvenile justice systems.
AJ-11 A study of the origin, development, philosophy, and legal basis of the American criminal justice process. Emphasis is given to court decisions which have implemented the U.S. Constitution’s guarantee of civil rights into the criminal justice system at the state and national levels.
AJ-154 A presentation of specific performance and instructional topics in probation. These topics include laws of arrest, roles and responsibilities, legal codes and statutes, violent behavior, and jail booking procedures. This course is certified by the California Board of Corrections and is mandatory training for individuals employed as probation officers in California.
AJ-155 A presentation of specific performance and instructional topics in juvenile correctional officer responsibilities in a probation context. This course is certified by the California Board of Corrections and is mandatory training for individuals employed as juvenile correctional officers by a county probation department in California.
AJ-170 A training course certified by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards & Training (POST) designed to meet the statutory basic training requirements for employment as a dispatcher for a public safety (law enforcement) agency.
AJ-189 A training course certified by the California Board of Corrections, Standards and Training for Corrections Bureau (STC) designed to meet the statutory basic training requirements for employment as an adult correctional officer at a local detention facility.
AJ-190F A course which fulfills the minimum firearms requirement of the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards & Training (POST) PC 832 Arrest & Control/Firearms Level III, Part 1 Reserve Peace Officer program. This course is certified by POST.
AJ-190S A course which fulfills the minimum Arrest & Control requirements of the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards & Training (POST) PC 832 Arrest & Control/Firearms Level III, Part 1 Reserve Peace Officer program. This standardized course is certified by POST.
AJ-191 A course of training for a Level III Reserve police officer and his/her responsibilities to provide limited support to regular peace officers. This course completes the training requirements established by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) for Level III Reserve Peace Officers.
AJ-199 A series of continuing education courses for active duty law enforcement officers, local adult and juvenile corrections officers, and probation officers. Each course partially fulfills or meets the state-mandated continuing education requirements for these positions. All courses are certified by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST), and/or the California Board of Corrections, Standards and Training for Corrections Bureau (STC).
AJ-2 A survey of the field of law enforcement as a profession, historical development, and both the current and future concepts and trends. Among the topics covered are: the roles and functions of law enforcement agencies as components of the criminal justice system; the roles, duties, and responsibilities of law enforcement personnel; and professional career opportunities.
AJ-3An introductory course of the field of corrections. Topics include: historical development; current concepts and practices; explanations of criminal behavior; functions and objectives of the criminal justice system concerned with institutional, probation, and parole processes as they modify the offender’s behavior; survey of professional career opportunities in public and private agencies.
AJ-4 An overview of the development of the criminal law. Topics include: historical development, philosophy of law and constitutional provisions; definitions, classifications of crimes and legal defenses and their applications to the system of administration of justice; legal research, review of case law methodology and concepts of law as a social force.
AJ-5A basic course in the sociological study of crime and crime causation. Topics include: an introduction to major types of criminal behavior, characteristics of offenders, factors which contribute to crime and juvenile delinquency; the function of law enforcement; the courts, probation; parole and institutions; crime control and treatment processes.
AJ-6 A course designed to provide students a working knowledge of evidence and case law relating to the admission of evidence in legal proceedings. Topics include the following: Origin, development, philosophy, and constitutional basis of evidence; constitutional, statutory, and procedural considerations which affect the admissibility of evidence; kinds and degrees of evidence; and case studies viewed from the conceptual level.
AJ-7 A study of the factors that create friction between the community and the criminal justice agencies. Topics include: the relationship of criminal justice agents with the local community; causal and symptomatic aspects of community understanding; lack of cooperation and mistrust; study of behavioral causes; ways to develop and maintain amicable relationships.
AJ-8A survey of the basic principles of criminal investigations. Topics include: the fundamentals of investigation; techniques of crime scene searches; the collection and preservation of physical evidence; sources of information, interview and interrogation; and follow-up investigations.
AJ-80 A course certified by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) to meet and exceed statutory basic law enforcement officer training requirements.
