Facilities and Grounds Physical Resources
Descriptive Summary The College has three primary instructional sites and several off-campus education sites; - The Eureka campus, the largest of the three with 392,835 square feet of building space, is located on a 268-acre site approximately seven miles south of the city of Eureka. The original construction of the Eureka campus began in 1968. The two newest buildings on this campus are the $13 million Learning Resource Center and a new $4 million Child Development Center. The Learning Resource Center will house the College Library, Learning Assistance Center, Instructional Technology Center, and Writing Laboratory. Construction began in the fall of 2000 and was completed in August 2002. Construction on the Child Development Center began in late spring 2001 and completed in December 2002. The Eureka Campus currently consists of 25 major buildings and several smaller structures. Some of the buildings on the Eureka campus are 40 years old and are beginning to show signs of age, typical for structures that old. The climate on the California North Coast, with its average annual rainfall of 45 inches, and the proximity of the campus to the Pacific Ocean contribute to the physical aging of campus buildings, vehicles, and outdoor equipment. - The Del Norte campus is located in Crescent City, approximately 80 miles north of Eureka and about 20 miles south of the Oregon border, on a 34-acre site with 26,675 square feet of building space. Campus constructed started in 1981 and consists of five buildings. The newest additions are two modular buildings. - The Mendocino Coast campus is located at the southern end of the City of Fort Bragg, approximately 135 miles south of Eureka and eight miles north of the town of Mendocino, on a 20-acre site with 30,438 square feet of building space. This campus consists of six buildings and construction began in 1986. The College also operates several off-campus education sites; - The Klamath-Trinity site is a leased building, located approximately 40 miles northeast of Eureka on the Hoopa Indian Reservation. - The historic “Ricks House” a turn of the century Victorian in the heart of Eureka, owned by the College and is used for as the “Center for Community Education and Professional Development”. - The Bianchi Farm in Shively is also owned by the College and is located approximately 40 miles south of the Eureka Campus. This site is a working farm and is used as an educational lab for several disciplines. - The Redwood Center for Business which is leased space in downtown Eureka - The Arcata Instructional Site which is15 miles North of Eureka and has several classrooms and a large computer lab. To consistently maintain such a large and aging District, the Department has had to work aggressively with the State and has been able to secure several grants to make major and continuous repairs to the District buildings. During the 1999-2000 year, we were granted and started projects to replace all the wood shingled roofs at the Eureka, Crescent City and Ft. Bragg Campuses with a new metal roofing system. We have also completed many other projects, the list can be viewed in the “who are we?” section.
