COLLEGE OF THE REDWOODS

Board of Trustees Policy No. 115
Administrative Regulation No. 115.01

PRE-SERVICE EDUCATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAMS

The Board recognizes the value of professional training for the pre-service educator. Since College of the Redwoods is the only community college in the large geographical area of the North Coast, and since the state colleges and universities train instructors for public and private institutions, College of the Redwoods accepts the obligation of involvement in practice educational activities.

The College of the Redwoods will provide a limited number of practice teaching stations for those pre-service teaching candidates. The following provisions shall prevail as guidelines:

1. The prospective teacher must be interviewed by the Dean, Administrative Services, to determine his/her interest in and preparation for community college teaching.

2. The College of the Redwoods faculty person who is to supervise the practice teacher, hereafter called the "master teacher," must agree to the provisions of the agreement after his acceptance of the practice teacher.

3. No master teacher may have more than one practice teacher under his direction. The master teacher is to be in the classroom at all times during the practice teacher's participation. This is not be be considered as a "free time" or "preparation-office time" by the master teacher. The master teacher will continue to assume the normal load units in addition to supervising the practice teacher.

4. The responsibility for the quality of instruction in the classroom rests with the master teacher. The course content, grading, recording keeping, and all other instructional matters are to be under his/her immediate supervision and direction.

5. The practice teacher should be directed into a wide variety of meaningful experiences in, and/or, out of the classroom. The purpose is to expose the prospective teacher to the role of the community college classroom teacher. Lectures, lab instruction, paper grading, design of tests, etc., are also integral parts of that experience. Routine tasks, although a function of the permanent faculty, should not become the steady role of the practice teacher. Responsibility for task assignment rests with the master teacher.

6. The master teacher and the practice teacher should spend an appropriate period of time critiquing the performance of the practice teacher. This should be done on a frequent basis and as soon after each class as is practical.

7. The master teacher must agree to the provisions of follow-up reports, conferences, etc., as required by the college or university so that adequate evaluation of the prospective instructor may be made.

8. If, at any time in the quarter, the master teacher feels the quality of instruction may be seriously impaired by continuation of the practice teaching, he has the right and the obligation to recommend discontinuation of the agreement. This recommendation should be made to the college of the Redwoods Executive Vice-President, Academic and Student Services, for his consideration in cooperation with the college or university officials involved in the placement and/or supervision of their practice teachers. In all cases, final determination of discontinuance lies with College of the Redwoods.

9. At the end of each school year the College of the Redwoods master teacher, the College of the Redwoods Executive Vice-President, Academic and Student Services, and the appropriate college or university personnel shall have a conference to evaluate procedures used in the College of the Redwoods practice teaching arrangements.

10. College of the Redwoods reserves the right to limit the number of practice teachers accepted in any one term and may reject any candidate for practice teaching at College of the Redwoods based upon interest and qualifications determined by College of the Redwoods.

11. The intent to discontinue all practice teaching activities at College of the Redwoods should be announced to all interested College of the Redwoods and college or university personnel at least one full quarter prior to such action.
