COLLEGE OF THE REDWOODS                              Board of Trustees Policy No. 503

                                                                                              Administrative Regulation No. 503.02

ACADEMIC RENEWAL

A student’s past, substandard, academic performance may not, for a variety of reasons, be reflective of the student’s subsequent demonstrated academic ability. In such instances, the student’s prior record may impair progress toward a legitimate educational goal. The regulation outlined here is designed to permit alleviation of such previously recorded, substandard, academic performance at College of the Redwoods so that the student can achieve an appropriate academic goal in a reasonable period of time.

Academic renewal shall conform to the following guidelines:

1.         Academic renewal can only be enacted one time, and it involves disregarding all grades for given terms in the computation of a student's grade point average. Only those terms during which a student earned a D, F, or N/C will be considered for academic renewal. If academic renewal is granted, the grade point average data for the entire term will be disregarded. Selective removal of grades within a given term is not permitted.  An unlimited number of terms may be eliminated from the cumulative grade point average calculation through academic renewal.  The terms need not be sequential.

2.         A student may apply for academic renewal only after completing 24.0 units of college-level work at College of the Redwoods, with a minimum grade point average of 2.0 and after a minimum of two years has elapsed since the earning of the grades to be disregarded.

3.         A petition requesting academic renewal, along with the student's written justification, shall be prepared by the student, in consultation with an academic advisor/counselor, and shall be submitted to the Director of Enrollment Services for review.  Final authority for the granting of academic renewal rests with the Vice President for Academic Affairs.

4.         The student's permanent record shall be annotated in such a manner that a record of all work remains legible, ensuring a complete academic history.
