What is an Early College High School?
An Early College High School is designed to assist historically under represented populations in higher education gain access to the college experience. Under represented populations are defined as first-generation college goers, English language learners, students of under represented ethnic/cultural groups, low-income youth and other young people who want something other than a traditional high school experience. Students can simultaneously earn a high school diploma and one to two years of transferable college credit to a four year institution -- tuition free. By design an early college high school also saves an individual or family money in the pursuit of a college degree.
Academy of the Redwoods is an alternative choice within the Fortuna Union High School District. The school is partnered with College of the Redwoods, creating a coherent unit, with high school and college-level work blended into a single academic program that allows a student the opportunity to earn a high school diploma and receive college credits in four to five years leading to an AA/AS degree or certificate program at the College of the Redwoods. The many program offerings at the College of the Redwoods represent "targets of opportunity" which prepare students for our region, "The Redwood Coast", most promising areas of economic and workforce development . These programs prepare students to enter the job market at a level sufficient for them to earn a "living wage" which could support a family; or be ready to transfer to a four year college or university with their lower division or general education requirements completed.
Academy of the Redwoods offers opportunities that are unlike any other school in our area. We expect our students to struggle intellectually and not be daunted by the challenge. People frequently ask us how we select our students. Our simple answer is that we want students who select us. We see their choice to come to the Academy as the first step they take in learning to become responsible for their own education. Thus, middle school grades are not a primary factor in selection. When prospective students talk to us, we are very interested in hearing why they want to come to the Academy. Given our standards for performance, students must be truly committed to engage a rigorous and accelerated academic curriculum, work collaboratively, make presentations, plan and execute projects, and reflect deeply on any negative behavior.
Like the handful of other Early College High Schools in the state, the Academy’s main objective is to graduate students in four to five years with a high school diploma and college credits towards an AA degree, a certificate, a four year university or a living wage job. The tools that we have at our disposal include: being located on the College of the Redwoods campus; allowing some students to enroll in CR classes as early as 9th grade; providing a nurturing learning community that emphasizes the core academic areas of math, science, English, and history; offering the arts through College of the Redwoods; and using the college academic programs during the students’ third and fourth years to complete their college programs and remaining high school graduation requirements.
