Academy of the Redwoods offers opportunities that are unlike any other school in our area. We expect our students to struggle intellectually and not be daunted by the challenge. People frequently ask us how we select our students. Our simple answer is that we want students who select us. We see their choice to come to the Academy as the first step they take in learning to become responsible for their own education. Thus, middle school grades are not a primary factor in selection. When prospective students talk to us, we are very interested in hearing why they want to come to the Academy. Given our standards for performance, students must be truly committed to engage a rigorous and accelerated academic curriculum, work collaboratively, make presentations, plan and execute projects, and reflect deeply on any negative behavior.

Like the handful of other Early College High Schools in the state, the Academy’s main objective is to graduate students in four to five years with a high school diploma and an AA degree that leads to a four year university or a living wage job. The tools that we have at our disposal include: being located on the College of the Redwoods campus; allowing some students to enroll in CR classes as early as 9th grade; providing a nurturing learning community that emphasizes the core academic areas of math, science, English, and history; offering the arts through College of the Redwoods; and using the college academic programs during the students’ third and fourth years to complete their college programs and remaining high school graduation requirements.
