Kite Runner Student Art Show 11/30 - 12/14

Art works related to the CR/HSU Book of the Year, The Kite Runner, made by student artists in Emily Silver's Watercolor and Drawing classes, will be exhibited in the cases adjacent to the Forum Theatre beginning Friday November 30, and continuing until Friday December 14, complemented by 3D vessels and objects made in Dave Zdrazil's Ceramics class.

Watercolor (Art 22) students created original watercolor paintings entitled "Afghani Fantasia," all of which incorporate an Afghan Islamic tile pattern to create unity among the works. Students who read the book or saw the film at its preview showing at the Minor Theatre have created images interpreted directly from characters and events in Hosseini's novel. Other students have chosen to make a physical or symbolic rendition of what it might be like to be in Afghanistan during its recent upheaval.

Beginning Drawing (Art 17) students developed a self portrait as a character from The Kite Runner. This is the second self portrait students have drawn in the class. Early in the semester, students drew a "before" self-portrait designed to serve as a benchmark for comparison with an "after" self-portrait to measure improvement in their drawing skills across the semester; the Kite Runner portrait is the "after" image.

In preparation for this project, the class was visited by Pakistani cultural expert Rabia, director of The Roshni Centre for Women, a Pakistani nonprofit organization. During a half-hour presentation, she showed examples of Islamic clothing from Pakistan and Afghanistan for both men and women, and demonstrated how it was to be worn. She also presented a slide show of contemporary life in Pakistan which, she says "has changed my life." In making presentations about life in Islamic countries, Rabia hopes "to share with people our needs and our hopes for the future." She is also very dedicated to Pennies for Peace,

Zdrazil's students have been approaching ceramics in many different ways during the semester and, as in the case of Silver's classes, this exhibition is a culmination of their experience. Pieces range from a a variety of decorative and functional vessels, to ceramic head of an Afghani by Mimi Gouldberg.  One of the focuses of Zdrazil's class is learning how use the pottery wheel, which takes a lot of patience and practice.  Students also fire their pieces in several different ways, including Raku, which is known for it's rich surfaces and unique appearance.

Stop by the Forum Theatre entryway and see this exhibit of consciously-made work by College of the Redwood artists!
