Dissertation: "Writing Home: Inhabitation and Imagination in American Literature."

This project draws from literary history, geography, and phenomenological philosophy to explore inhabitation. My project examines works from Thoreau's natural history essays and Journal, to Mary Austin, Aldo Leopold, and novelists such as Sarah Orne Jewett, Vardis Fisher, Willa Cather, John Steinbeck, and Leslie Marmon Silko to expose patterns of affiliation and alienation that speak to the modern predicaments of environmental degradation and psychic disorder.

Dissertation Committee: Glen A. Love (Director); William Rossi; Louise Westling; James

Crosswhite; Matthew Dennis (History).

O.R.A.C.L.E.:

During 1992 I worked as a teacher in the Marin County, CA,  Public Schools' O.R.A.C.L.E. independent learning program.  I met weekly with at-risk youth, high school drop-outs, and those ejected from the system, and I assigned them work toward completing their diploma requirements.  I also set up a special satellite branch of the program for the low-income housing projects in Marin City.
