Michael Carr of McKinleyville High School will be joining the newly crowned GVC Champion Men’s Track team at College of the Redwoods this upcoming 2017 season. Carr is another local shot put and discus thrower who will be competing for Redwoods while he starts his college education.

“Michael did great things at Mack High and has yet to tap into his athletic potential” said Coach Eric Wright. Carr was the number two shot putter in in all of HDN this season. “One of our priorities is to keep our local talent to help build our student athlete community at CR” said Head Coach Reed Elmore.

Carr will continue throwing the shot put and discus as a Corsair next season and possibly pick up the hammer and/or javelin. “Next season is going to be interesting as we will have 3 Michaels in the throwing department alone” stated Wright as Carr will be joining sophomores Michael McClurg and Michael Mazzocco as well as Haneef Foster in the growing throws program.

The CR Track and Field family would also like to welcome Hoopa Valley High School’s Naishian Richards, who will be joining this team this coming 2017 track season. This season, Richards qualified and competed in the discus at the North Coast Section’s Meet of Champions meet to cap off her successful senior season at HVHS.

“She is going to be a great addition to our small, yet successful Women’s team. Naishian has the right attitude and passion to be successful to this sport”, claimed CR throws coach Eric Wright. She will be joining sophomores Grace Bruschi and Miriam Duron in the throws squad. Richards will continue to throw the discus and the shot put for CR and will add the hammer throw to her repertoire this coming season.

“Naishian is the first of many great athletes coming out of Hoopa. They have a great throwing tradition there. It is great seeing our local athletes staying in their community to continue their education and athletic aspirations” said Head Coach Reed Elmore.

CR is excited to welcome Richards and Carr into the Redwoods family.
