College of the Redwoods sports auction raises more than $105K

Our community showed its support for community college sports in a huge way this week, donating more than $105,000 on Thursday at 13th Annual College of the Redwoods Athletics Dinner and Sports Auction. The Dinner and Sports Auction is the biggest fundraiser of the year that directly benefits CR student athletes and their sports programs. The community donated more than ever this year, and more than 500 people attended the event, which is also a record.

These funds will be used responsibly by the Athletics Department to provide much-needed services and equipment for CR student athletes. The generosity our community shows year after year helps offset shrinking revenues for athletics, and keeps CR competitive with other programs across the state.

This year’s event highlighted David Wells as the honoree and featured speaker. Wells is a local product, having attended Lafayette Elementary, Zane Junior High and Eureka High School, before moving on to College of the Redwoods. While at CR, Wells led the Corsairs to three Golden Valley Conference Championships; two in track and field, and one in cross country.

His running success took him to Stanford University where he competed in the distance events on the Cardinal track team. He earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Stanford University.

Wells returned to Humboldt County a few years after completing his education to coach track and cross country at Humboldt State University. His Lumberjack teams and student-athletes enjoyed great success during his 24-year tenure (1980-2004). He followed his retirement from Humboldt by starting Wells Commercial Real Estate, of which he is now the Broker and President.
