College of the Redwoods didn’t have to look far for a replacement after former volleyball coach Marla Gleave announced she was stepping down from the athletic department to assume an administrative position at the school following the fall season.
Redwoods just turned to Humboldt State’s backyard and found Oceana Matsubu, a four-year star for the Lumberjacks who went on to play professionally in Europe and currently coaches locally at the youth and collegiate levels to fill the position.
"The thing that really set her apart from the other candidates in my mind were the ringing endorsements she got from Sue Woodstra and Kelly Wood (HSU’s former and current head coaches, respectively)," said CR Athletic Director Joe Hash. "They both thought she would be, in their own words, a phenomenal choice as someone who could bring a tremendous amount of passion and energy to the program."
Matsubu, who was a three-time All-Pioneer Valley selection at Mesa Verde High School in Citrus Heights as an outside hitter, walked on to play at HSU after she graduated high school in 2008.
She spent the next four years playing for the Jacks, working her way into an athletic scholarship, and her senior year, led the California Collegiate Athletic Association with 367 kills (4.03 per game) and finished second in points (421).
Matsubu’s 966 career kills lands her ninth in the HSU all-time record books.
Following her outstanding collegiate career, Matsubu turned professional, joining a team in Italy where she played for six months before returning to the states to coach at the University of Texas in various summer camps.
Then she went back overseas to play professionally again, joining Bal De Traver in Switzerland, which is where she tore her ACL in her left knee.
Matsubu joined the Jacks volleyball program as an assistant coach in 2013, and last November, started the Humboldt Volleyball Club, which is essentially an AAU volleyball league for fifth through 12th graders.
"I’m just really excited for the opportunity and can’t wait to get started," said Matsubu, who officially accepted the position on Wednesday. "I’m ready to get out there in the community and start recruiting and try to build a competitive program."
Matsubu takes over for Gleave, who became in the school’s volleyball coach in 2008 after coaching the women’s basketball team for 10 years from 1995 to 2005.
"Marla stepped in and really brought some stability to the program which, at the time, had a lot of turnover in coaching," Hash said. "Now she’s moving on into a great position here at the school, which has been kind of a natural progression for her. We definitely appreciate what she’s done for us here in the athletic department and wish her great success in the future."
