College of the Redwoods presents ‘Recreating Landscape’ Exhibition

The College of the Redwoods Creative Arts Gallery presents Recreating Landscape, a joint exhibition by Amanda Salov and Renee Couture, opening February 12. This exhibition is centered on the theme of the natural world, and includes artwork made from a variety of materials, from ceramics to laser-cut images and small-scale installation.

There will be a public reception on Tuesday, February 12, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Both artists are based in the Pacific Northwest. Renee Couture’s work looks at how our relationship to our environment shifts and evolves over time. Her sculptures focus on human-made boundaries, the ways in which we reshape our environment, and consider the roles of climate change and natural disasters on our future interactions with natural sites. The subtle embellishments and alterations hold meaning and connections within her sculptures. Couture received support from the Oregon Arts Commission, a state agency funded by the State of Oregon to create this work.

In contrast, Salov’s work focuses on a moment expressed in physical form: temporal, fragile and fleeting. ‘Peaks and Valleys’, her most recent series, is a physical manifestation of many personal experiences: watching the monitors of a loved one in an ICU hospital room, being enchanted by the successes and failures of research, living in an isolated valley, working to hang lace, and viewing a panorama of mountains and valleys. Salov received support from the Artist Trust, a state agency funded by the State of Washington to create this work.

Recreating Landscape offers a better understanding and new ways to consider the natural world. It carves out a meditative and quiet place of reflection on one’s relationship to nature.

The Creative Arts Gallery at College of the Redwoods is located on the Eureka Main Campus, North Entrance and is open Wednesday and Thursday 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and by appointment. Admission is free and open to the public. For more information, please visit www.redwoods.edu/artgallery or call the Art Department office at (707) 476-4559.
