The College of the Redwoods Creative Arts Gallery is honored to present Our Time Has Come Back to Us: Native Viewpoint in the 21st Century. This exhibition is a display of monotype prints made by Hoopa Natives and members of neighboring tribes, many of whom are former College of the Redwoods students. The gallery will host a reception for the artists on Thursday, October 24, from 4-6 pm. Directly before the reception at 3 pm, the gallery will host a panel discussion with artists Ralph Peters III, Eric Ruiz, and Hayley Hutt.

This exhibition asks the question “Are we still here?”

Our Time Has Come Back to Us offers an immediate glimpse into another world. These artists survived genocide, assimilation, and reformation. Their vision, carried forward ten thousand years, is still intact. Featured artist Ralph Peters III expressed, “The world we know has a way of balancing itself out. We are people of the earth and of the earth we must return… Like water, we become the life stream that transcends from one world into the next.”

The work conveys a living culture that rejoices in its heritage and reaches forward toward the future. Peters states “Through the medium of printmaking we are able to express our individual cultural roles: telling stories, translating languages, and using visual interpretations. We are the very definition of art…art is in our blood. Like packing medicine, we have purpose and importance through this medium.”

Peters goes on to say “In Hupa we say NaLa-xw’ana’diyawh nohmingyay.  In an anglicized way of thinking this translates to ‘Our time, it has come back to us’. The time of the American Indian has returned. We are the American Indian. And yes, we are still here.”

Exhibiting artists include Jessica Allen, Kendall Allen, Freddie Brown, Derik Gates, Hayley Hutt, Le Monie Hutt, Robert Jackson, Diane James, Rafey James Jr., Loren Lavine, Augustine Montgomery, Leland Brodie Muro, Madolin O'Rourke, Ralph Peters III, Phillip Reed, Victoria Rousseau, Eric Ruiz, Dorothy Silva and Nomi Sonoquie.

Support for this exhibition includes the Crow’s Shadow Institute of Art in Pendleton, Oregon. Many artists included in this exhibition learned the monotype printing process through visits to this facility. Supporters also include James Lavadour, Frank Janzen, and Jolene Gates, HCATEP (a Hoopa Tribal Education Program). Additional funding and material support provided by the Humboldt Area Foundation, and Ink People Center for the Arts.

The Creative Arts Gallery at College of the Redwoods is located on the Eureka Main Campus, North Entrance and is open Wednesday and Thursday 12 to 4 pm and by appointment.
