Indivisible Ferndale is pleased to announce it is hosting a fundraising event to benefit CR’s Redwoods Room & Board Scholarship Fund. According to a College of the Redwoods Foundation update, this semester long, renewable scholarship provides students who are housing and food insecure with housing in CR’s residence halls and meals in the cafeteria. Begun in January 2019, seventeen scholarships were awarded this last year. The CR Foundation plans to award eight to ten scholarships in spring 2020. The Redwoods Room & Board Scholarship program, according to the CR update, is the first of its kind in the country, where a college utilized its own facilities to house and feed students experiencing homelessness.
CR is launching other programs to assist students. Marty Coelho, Executive Director of College Advancement & the CR Foundation, says, “The need is great…15% of community college students are homeless, 35% housing insecure and 56% are food insecure.”
The fundraising event is Saturday, February 29, 2020 from 7 PM to 10 PM at the Ferndale Community Center, 100 Berding Street in Ferndale. Tickets are $25 per person. The festive Leap Year themed evening features music by The Gatehouse Well, small bites, an exciting silent auction, and no host wine & beer bar.
All net proceeds will go to the College of the Redwoods Foundation to benefit their room and board scholarship fund. In addition to Indivisible Ferndale members, the event is made possible by a generous contribution from Lost Coast Brewery.
Tickets can be purchased at the door; at Aste Law Office, 406 Main St. Ferndale; or online at www.indivisibleferndale.org/cr. Those who cannot attend but still want to participate can contribute online at https://www.redwoods.edu/foundation/Room-and-Board-Scholarship.
