CR Supports Life-long Learning for Staff (and their spouses)!

This spring, Jerry Goodrow’s Welding Technology 61 class is a CR family affair. Not only is his wife Mitzi a student, but she is also joined by three CR employees – sisters Morgan and Augusta (Gussie) Solem, and Sebastian Sisson, (also the son of CR employee Theresa Sisson). And to round out the mix, Forestry and Natural Resources professor Valerie Elder’s husband Shane is here, refining his welding skills as well.

It is the living example of CR’s mission to provide lifelong learning needs to our District and our staff. And when employees take classes at here at CR, they get a first-hand look at the CR student experience, which makes them better able to serve our community. It’s a win-win!

“I was inspired to take a welding class at College of the Redwoods because my dad was a journeyman welder here in Humboldt County for over 26 years," says Gussie Solem, who is the Administrative Secretary for Career Education. "Taking this class has given my sister Morgan and me a new understanding of the work that our dad did when we were growing up," she continues. "I would highly encourage other employees to seize the opportunity to take classes here. It’s convenient to leave work and walk into the building next door for class. It’s never too late to learn a new skill!”
