Pathways to Persistence, Student Success Takes a Campus: It Takes YOU!

Event date: 2/9/2018 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM Export event

Guest speaker Thomas Brown will be here to provide us with training on Pathways to Persistence from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. (room TBD).  RSVP required by January 26th!  Please call or email Wendy Bates (476-4192 or wendy-bates@redwoods.edu).

Why do some students leave college as the result of incidents that appear relatively minor, while others persist in the face of significant obstacles?  Are some students “pre-destined” to fail and withdraw from college because they are underprepared?  If this is the case, why do some students with strong academic preparation leave college, while others achieve at high levels despite being from “at-risk” backgrounds?  Do some students leave college for reasons that are expected and understandable, while others could be encouraged and supported to stay?  Which campus offices or personnel have the responsibility for increasing student development, satisfaction and persistence?  Pathways to Persistence is a simulation exercise that provides insights and responses to these questions.

Pathways is a highly interactive presentation and exercise that assists classified staff, administrators, faculty and others to act—individually and collectively—to increase student engagement, learning, and success.  Pathways highlights research regarding  the reasons students leave college, challenges some of the common myths and misconceptions about students attrition, and shares evidence that what happens to students after they enroll is often more important than their pre-enrollment attributes and experiences.  Pathways illustrates that everyone plays a role to increase student success—no matter their official position or level of authority.
