The College of the Redwoods Creative Arts Gallery will host the Art Department’s 2017 Faculty & Staff Exhibition from Nov. 27, 2017 to Feb. 1, 2018. There will be a public reception for the artists on Tuesday, Nov. 28 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.

Participating artists include Cynthia Hooper, Dave Zdrazil, Emily Silver, Erica Botkin, Hannah Meredith, Mina Cohen, Natalia Margulis, Ruth Jensen, Ben Funke, Mary Mallahan, Shannon Sullivan, Tova Lund and Willa Briggs. Work shown includes paintings, sculptures, mixed media, digital media, watercolor, ceramic, photography, and video.

The 2017 Faculty & Staff Exhibition reflects the diverse interests, ideas, and media that CR’s art faculty and staff explore as a part of their own studio practice. The work exhibited demonstrates the skill and commitment to the varied concepts and approaches that contemporary art making demands. This exhibition affords an opportunity to learn from these practicing professionals, and also to see how these instructors translate their artistic inquiries into the classroom.

Professor Shannon Sullivan’s multi-media sculpture Interactive Bubble Array (Cobalt) encourages gallery visitors to interactively touch and modify the artwork’s form. Professor Natalia Margulis’ mixed media installation examines the experiences of transgender people in the United States and, as she states, “wrestles with the idea of ‘naturalness’ and the natural ‘habitat’ for people, places, and objects that do not neatly fit into their surrounding environments.”  Ben Funke’s video is a reflection of the current cultural climate in the United States—-a culture he sees as “currently under attack, becoming severely altered, damaged and hardly recognizable.” Willa Briggs’ new mono-print, a work on paper, is part of her ongoing series on human relationships and their interconnectedness. Mary Mallahan’s new ceramic work connects to and satisfies the user through the act of touch and functional necessity.

The Creative Arts Gallery at College of the Redwoods is located on the Eureka Main Campus, North Entrance and is open Monday 10 to 4 pm, Tuesday 10 to 6 pm, Wednesday 12 to 4 pm, Thursday 12 to 6 pm, and by appointment.
