Are you looking for a part-time teaching position?

The Workforce and Community Education Department at College of the Redwoods has a mission to serve the educational needs and personal enrichment of Humboldt and Del Norte Counties. We are dedicated to providing excellent programming. We strive to bring the best instructors and course offerings to our community, so if you have a skill to share, we are interested!

How to get started?

If you are interested in being a part of this fun-loving and dedicated team, please send an email with the following information:

  • Current Resume
  • Course Description with 3-4 course outcomes.
  • Desired Hourly Wage Range (negotiable)
  • Course Title
  • Supplies and/or books suggested for class & estimated materials costs
  • Anything else you think would be helpful
  • Images or photos for marketing if you have any.

You will be contacted to discuss the class details further. Please consider reviewing the Workforce & Community Education Instructor Handbook for more information.

Our requirements:

All you need is a passion for a subject, expertise or skill in that area, and a desire to share that knowledge with others. A sense of humor, as well as great communication and people skills. You must be flexible and have a desire to educate people of all ages, genders, abilities and cultural backgrounds. If this sounds like you, please contact us!

Our students:

Workforce and Community Education is for everyone! Our Department currently serves many locations throughout Humboldt and Del Norte Counties including Eureka, Fortuna, Arcata, Garberville, Crescent City, Hoopa and more. All ages participate in Community Education.

Teaching Assignments:

Upon completion of requested paperwork, the Workforce and Community Education office will work with the instructor on the assignment of class dates and times, class fee, and teaching pay rate. Courses are offered based on minimum enrollment, and availability of instructional requirements (such as classroom space, equipment, and supplies) to ensure optimal instructional conditions.

Course Format:

Workforce and Community Education courses are formatted to be user-friendly to the general public. They tend to be different from traditional education in:

  • Lower Cost: Most people are willing to spend smaller fees for several segments of a course rather than paying a larger, one-time fee.
  • Shorter Time-Commitment: Many courses tend to be shorter, meet less often and have more flexibility to accommodate busy schedules. Most adults are unable to commit to long-term, frequently met courses and seem to be more willing to explore new interest that do not make big demands on time.

Pay Scale:

Pay can vary greatly based on level of expertise and training required, type of course, and more. Generally, pay rates for instruction will be per class. You will need to discuss pay with the Director, Workforce & Community Education.

Marketing:

  • Newspaper Ads: Periodically Workforce and Community Education places display and classified ads in local newspapers.
  • Social Media: Facebook, Constant Contact, Lost Coast Outpost, craigslist.org, KHSU, KMUD, and many media sources are used to promote your class.
  • Flyers: A flyer will be created for your class and are available in our lobbies. In addition, they are posted at the CR Main Campus, around the community, and instructors may be provided copies so that they are able to distribute to people they know as well.
  • We encourage instructors to use their own personal social media sources to advertise their class.

Here are some examples of Workforce & Community Education classes we are looking for:

  • Truck Driving - See job description
  • Art Classes
  • Screen Printing
  • Workforce Trainings that will give students a job skill
  • Any area that you can share your expertise

These are just examples. We are open to new suggestions!
