Pharmacy Technician

This comprehensive 50 hour program will prepare students to work as a pharmacy technician in a retail or other pharmacy setting and to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s PTCB exam.  Course content includes: pharmacy medical terminology, the history of pharmacy, the pharmacy practice in multiple environments, pharmacy calculations and measurements, reading and interpreting prescriptions and defining drugs by generic and brand names.  Through classroom lecture and hands on labs, students will review dosage calculations, drug classifications, the “top 200 drugs”, I.V. flow rates, sterile compounding, dose conversions, aseptic technique, the handling of sterile products, total parental nutrition (TPN), dispensing of prescriptions, inventory control and billing and reimbursement. 

 

Course Objectives: 

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1.  Read and interpret basic pharmacy calculations and measurements.

2.  Understand the basic distinctions between generic and brand name drugs.

3.  Be able to apply basic good practices for use in the pharmacy setting.

 

Course Prerequisites/Recommendations:

  • Must have basic reading literacy
  • Basic Elementary-Level Math skills

This one-day injections training is for those who are employed, or seeking employment, in a medical office setting and will be working under the supervision of a physician. It meets the standards and qualifications established by the Division of Allied Health Professionals, Board of Medical Quality Assurance, and State of California. Please bring a calculator to class.

Course Objectives:

  • Know Universal Precautions
  • Know the Injection sites
  • How to administer a Subcutaneous, Intramuscular, Intradermal injection
  • How to calculate drug dosage correctly

College of the Redwoods Community Education offers training to become a Certified Medical Assistant. This not-for-credit class with lecture and in-class labs includes clinical rotation at a local medical office. Front and back Office Medical Assistant skills will be covered in an interactive classroom format.

Become a nationally certified Phlebotomist! The complete Phlebotomy Program includes 90 hours of didactic instruction and a clinical rotation consisting of a minimum of 40 hours. Students must successfully complete the didactic portion with overall grade of 75% to be eligible to continue onto the clinical portion of the program. Nationally certified phlebotomists can work in multiple health care settings, including medical offices, hospitals, clinics, and laboratories.

This North Coast EMS-approved course meets state requirements for EMT refresher training, including Skills Competency Verification.  Course includes rigorous and fast-paced didactic instruction, skills sessions, and scenario practice.  Topics include personal safety, medicolegal issues, patient assessment, and management of medical and traumatic emergencies.  Participants who successfully complete this course will be eligible to apply for re-certification as a California EMT.

Notes:  This course does NOT include CPR re-certification. Additional requirements are needed for NREMT re-certification.

Prerequisite:  Current EMT certification, or previous EMT certification expired for no more than six months. Continued state EMT certification may still be possible if EMT certification is expired for more than six months; please contact virginia-plambeck@redwoods.edu
