Master of Science in Nursing

NURS-3: Nursing Science and Practice Concepts III NURS-4: Nursing Science and Practice Concepts IV

I have been teaching in the CR RN Nursing program since 2006. My work experience and practice have been in critical care, in a variety of settings and specialties. I also served as an instructor, teaching and training nurses in critical care and was an Advanced Cardiac Life Support instructor for over fifteen years. My most fulfilling role was as a mentor to promote certification and education of critical care nurses to achieve excellence in patient care, to optimize patient/family care experiences and patient outcomes. My volunteer time has included service on the board of directors for the Humboldt County Breast Health Project, past board member and president of the local Humboldt County chapters of Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society of Nursing and the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. As I reflect back on my personal teaching philosophy and how it has developed, I have been thinking of a tapestry. As I have continued to learn and grow, my philosophy becomes more densely woven with a blend of beliefs, values, reflection, incorporation of new knowledge and an expanding worldview. The process, I realize, is one that will not be completed as long as I continue to teach.

I actually pursued nursing with encouragement from my mother who has always wanted to pursue nursing as a career. In the beginning, it was a profession I saw as a pathway in my pursuit of independence to support myself as a woman. Of course, I had no idea what I was getting into and what has turned into over 40 years of gratifying professional practice.

I believe that nursing is both a science and an art - and the greatest benefits to me come in the service to others - both patients and colleagues. Nursing provides multiple outlets for practice - from hospitals, clinics, community, education, business - for life long growth and adventures!
