Student Exam Proctoring

Some classes require one or more proctored exams during the term. Taking a proctored exam means formally identifying yourself and taking an exam under the supervision of a proctor. Check your course syllabus for exam requirements and proctoring forms.

Your instructor may offer 3 possible options:

  • You can make an appointment at any CR testing center near you (See below)
  • Your instructor may offer the option to take the exam online using Proctorio
  • You can always arrange and pay for your own local proctor to administer the exam (The proctor must be authorized by your instructor)

Use a CR testing center near you

You must make an appointment in order to receive testing at the locations below (you may be turned away otherwise). When making your appointment, check to find out what type of identification you will need to bring

CR Testing Center Locations:

You can take your exams at any of the CR testing centers; the Eureka Academic Support Center (707/476-4154), the Del Norte Education Center (707/465-2330) or the Klamath-Trinity Hoopa Site (530/625-4821). You will need to MAKE AN APPOINTMENT and bring a VALID PHOTO ID.

Use Proctorio

Your instructor may offer the option to take the exam at home, using Proctorio. This option requires a webcam and the chrome internet browser to work. If you choose this option, you will need to enable a webcam on your computer and Proctorio will record you taking the exam. You will be recorded during the entire exam and any suspicious behaviors flagged by Proctorio for review by your instructor. For more information about this software see the FAQ on the Proctorio Website

Pay for your own local proctor

If you are not using a College of the Redwoods testing center or Proctorio (the online automated proctoring system), then you will need to arrange and pay for your own exam proctoring by filling out the Form B: “Student/Proctor Agreement Form” provided by your instructor. Check your class syllabus and Canvas site for specific course proctoring information.

It is the student’s responsibility to make arrangements with the proctor well in advance of the exam, using Form B: “Student/Proctor Agreement Form” and to pay all costs for proctoring. Once you’ve identified a person who agrees to be your proctor, you must complete and email your instructor the Form B: “Student/Proctor Agreement Form” per the dates on the proctoring schedule.

Students may use a proctor who meets any of the following criteria:

Librarian, testing coordinator, administrator, or teacher at an elementary or secondary school, community college, or university. In addition, military chaplains, testing administrators, education services officers, or prison officials are acceptable.

Please note: The following may NOT proctor this exam for you:An immediate work supervisor, relative, significant other, CR student, or anyone living in your home.

You will need to use a computer at your proctor’s place of business and under your proctor’s supervision. When making your appointment, check to find out what type of identification will be required.

Unless otherwise instructed, you will access your proctored exam the same way you would normally access an exam. In most cases, this means logging into your Canvas class site and opening the exam link. The only difference is that the proctor will have to enter a password for you.

Be sure to find out what resources (such as calculators, scratch paper, notebooks, etc.) you are allowed to use during the exam. The proctor will not allow you to use any resource unless it has been cleared by the instructor.

IMPORTANT: If you are NOT going to take the exam at one of the CR proctoring sites or by using Proctorio, you must email the Form B: Student/Proctor Agreement Form to your instructor by the dates specified in the syllabus or you may forfeit your chance to take the exams.

Proctoring FAQ

What is a proctor?

A proctor is an approved person that administers an exam and agrees to fulfill the proctor responsibilities required by the instructor.

The proctor will verify a student’s identity by checking a photo ID and will ensure academic integrity guidelines during exams are followed (e.g., no notes, textbooks, outside assistance, etc.)

What is an online-proctored exam?

Some courses allow you to take your tests online, from home or anywhere you like, using an online test proctoring service called Proctorio. If your instructor uses it the course syllabus will explain how Proctorio works.

You can also take your test online through Canvas under the administration of a proctor. Your proctor will need to have a computer with internet access available for you to take your online exams. You will not be permitted to utilize your own personal computer. Once you have accessed your exam in Canvas, the proctor will enter a password that will open the exam up to you.

Do I need a proctor?

Some but not all online classes require a proctor for one or more exams. Check your syllabus to determine whether or not you will need a proctor and contact your instructor if you need help arranging for one. It is the student’s responsibility to locate and designate an acceptable proctor before the exam time frame.

Who can be a proctor?

Acceptable proctors include any established College of the Redwoods testing center or any of the following individuals: Librarian, testing coordinator, administrator, or teacher at an elementary or secondary school, community college, or university. In addition, military chaplains, testing administrators, education services officers, or prison officials are acceptable.

Relatives, direct supervisors, co-workers, or anyone the student has a personal relationship with, are not qualified proctors and will be denied. To be approved to administer exams, a proctor must be affiliated with a suitable organization, such as a college, school, library or educational testing facility.

Do I need to bring anything to the test?

Yes! You must make an appointment in order to receive testing (you may be turned away otherwise). You must bring a picture ID with you and only materials designated by your instructor in writing are allowed (Check the syllabus).

How do I designate a proctor not at a CR Testing Center?

Once you’ve identified a person who agrees to be your proctor, you must complete and return to your instructor the Form B: “Student/Proctor Agreement Form (Links to an external site)” before the prearranged due date. The Instructor will send an email confirming receipt of the proctor information. After your proctor has been approved they will receive detailed proctoring instructions via email.

I designated my proctor; now what happens?

Once your proctor has been approved and receives the proctoring instructions, you will be able to take the exam at the day/time agreed upon between you and your proctor. Bring a photo ID with you on the day of your exam. You will not be able to bring extra materials with you to the exam (e.g., purses, backpacks, notebooks, textbooks, phones, etc.) unless your instructor has specifically told you that certain items are permitted (e.g., book, certain type of calculator, etc.)
