College of the Redwoods’ soccer programs swept Friday's home openers at Community Stadium, marking the first time both men's and women's soccer have won both won their first home games of the season since 2016.

Men's soccer

For men's soccer head coach Kyle Van Dyke, Friday's 2-1 win over Contra Costa College marks his first since taking over the program at the start of the 2018 season, which saw Redwoods finish 0-14-3.

“I just tell the guys to leave it all out on the field and work hard throughout," Van Dyke said. "On Friday, we really dominated the midfield. (Contra Costa's) only shot on goal came on a penalty kick late in the game."

Justice Evans and Richmond Miamen each chipped in a goal for Redwoods in the win. Miamen, a freshman from Rhode Island who's brother Dave Todd played football for CR, has three goals on the year.

"Justice was dominant in the midfield, it was his best defensive game since he's been here," Van Dyke said of the sophomore. "And (Miamen) is great at finding openings and getting to his spots."

Redwoods is 1-3-1 on the year. Up next, a home game Tuesday against Mendocino.

Women's soccer

Jaycee Morias found the back of the net twice as Redwoods downed visiting Mendocino 3-0 Friday afternoon.

Grace Rosebrook added a goal in the win.

On Tuesday Redwoods defeated Mendocino 8-0, helped by a hat-trick from Amy Reyes. Redwoods is off to a 3-1 start and second-year head coach Julio Ayala said his club is shaping up to be everything he hoped for.

"The whole team is buying into what we are trying to build," Ayala said. "All the individual sacrifice and hard work these women have put in is starting to reveal itself."

Redwoods will get a week break before welcoming City College of San Francisco to Community Stadium on Saturday.
