Basketball teams get set for home openers in busy week for CR sports

College of the Redwoods Athletics – The CR women’s team will play its home opener against College of Marin on Saturday afternoon.

By Ray Hamill — The College of the Redwoods men’s and women’s basketball teams will play their home openers in the next few days in what will be a busy week for Corsairs sports.

The CR women will welcome College of Marin to Eureka for their home opener on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m., while the men’s team will play Simpson University JVs on Monday evening at 5 p.m

The CR women are 0-5 but had to begin the new season with a limited roster, with three key players still playing soccer and volleyball.

However, with a full roster on hand and some practice time together head coach Jain Tuey and her player will be hoping to get their first win against the Mariners.

This year’s CR team includes Molly Slayton, Kim Lewis, Kyla Albee, Lily Shelton, Olivia Railsback, Lily Hoban, Alia Prentiss, Ronee Norwood, Ellie Pesch and Moriah Bowles.

The Marin women’s team will once again feature some former H-DNL players who will be returning to the area for the game.

Sophomore Isobel Crosswhite, a former Fortuna Husky, is in her second year with the Mariners and is joined this season by freshman Mataya Sherman, a recent St. Bernard’s graduate.

The Mariners are 4-4 on the young season.

The CR men, meanwhile, will carry some momentum into their home opener after two recent wins to close out the Mendocino tournament.

The Corsairs ended a four-game losing streak with back-to-backs victories over Lassen and Siskiyous and are now 3-5 on the season.

After Monday’s home opener, the CR men will host their annual Coach Treggs Classic, which tips off on Thursday and runs for three days.

Two other CR teams will also be in action later in the week.

The CR men’s wrestling team will travel to Modesto to compete in the NorCal regional championships on Saturday (Dec. 2).

It has been a successful return to action for the program this season and head coach Brandon Benvenuti is hoping between five and eight of his grapplers will qualify for the state championships.

And rounding out a busy week for the Corsairs, next Saturday the CR football team will host a bowl game for the second straight year.

The 8-2 Corsairs have won five straight games and will play Hartnell in the Grizzly Bowl at the Redwood Bowl on Saturday at 1 p.m.
