CR Students Heather Saylor and Danielle Jenkins Honored by Soroptimist International of Humboldt Bay!

Published on 4/22/2018.

I often humbled by the stories and achievements of so many of our extraordinary students.  CR students Heather Saylor received a Women's Re-entry Award and Danielle Jenkins received a Live Your Dream Award from Soroptimist International of Humboldt Bay. Heather and Danielle are true profiles in courage and are testaments to the strength and resilience of so many of our students.

Heather and Danielle are described in the Times-Standard article:  http://www.times-standard.com/lifestyle/20180403/soroptimists-honor-women-teens.  I want to share a little of their stories that were printed in the article.

Saylor, who came from a neglectful household, had her first child at 16 and quit school. She lived with her daughter on the streets until she realized it was no environment for a child and she decided to find a family to adopt her daughter. Saylor moved to Humboldt County and soon turned her life around. She enrolled at College of the Redwoods and plans to use her education to help others. She was invited to join the Honor’s Program in her second semester.

Jenkins is a student at College of the Redwoods currently studying early childhood education. She has two small children and has overcome personal obstacles and a disability to move herself and her family forward.

Heather and Danielle are remarkable people! Their stories remind me of why our work as educators are so very important.
