CR receives Award for Innovation in Higher Education

Published on 4/25/2018.

California’s 2017-18 budget included $20 million for the Awards for Innovation in Higher Education. The Awards for Innovation are to support an innovation that has been scaled or is in the process of being scaled at a California community college or district that improves student success, is sustainable, and can be scaled regionally or throughout the state.

CR just received a 1.2 million dollars from the Award for Innovation in Higher Education to support educational programming at Pelican Bay State Prison. This award will provide resources in the form of professional development, technology, and most importantly, and personnel to support our prison education initiative. This award will allow CR to enhance the transformation of the lives of incarcerated individuals, while also fully supporting the needs of the Del Norte Education Center. CR’s proposal included a goal of growing enrollment from 149 part-time students to 300 students with course offerings to allow for full-time enrollment and the ability to complete a degree.

Thank you to the faculty and staff who have done a fantastic job growing the program with limited resources.  Thank you to Dr. Angelina Hill for submitting the innovation proposal.
