Del Norte Campus Mushroom Story

Published on 10/29/2018.

Our new biology associate faculty, Laura Morgan, is teaching a recently approved course—Mushrooms of the North Coast—for the first time at the Del Norte campus.  The class has proven to be popular--attracting local students and community members from as far away as Brookings, Oregon.

Laura and her students recently spent a Saturday afternoon surveying the 17-acre Spruce/Fir forest that is part of the Del Norte campus.  They collected and identified over 20 mushroom species on campus (see attached pictures).  The forest is an important llab resource for the biology and environmental science courses and gives students the opportunity to study science in their own backyard.  Laura and her students did their part to maintain the forest environment by also collecting over 8 large bags of trash during their hike.

If you don’t know Laura, she is a true CR student success story. She is a recent graduate from HSU and has been teaching biology courses at the Eureka and Del Norte campus for the past year.  Her background is in botany and she started her career as a student at CR at the Del Norte campus.  Laura is excited to be teaching biology in the community in which she grew up.

We are lucky to have her as part of our faculty and college community.
