The Eureka Campus is Changing Above and Below Ground

Published on 2/13/2019.

Thanks to the State, we're going to upgrade our utility infrastructure system (UIR) and build a new Creative Arts builidng and a new Physical Education/Gymnasium Complex on the Eureka Campus. All three projects will be completed between spring 2019 and the end of 2024.

Bruce Emad, President of the Board of Trustees said, “These new projects will continue the upgrading of facilities at College of the Redwoods.  The state has already funded and built our new administration and student services building, the Learning Resource Center (Library), the theater, the sciences and humanities buildings, and we recently refurbished our track and tennis and pickle ball courts.“

The state funded a project to build a new Creative Arts building is expected to be completed in 2021.  Dr. George Potamianos, our Dean of Arts and Humanities, recognizes the importance of the College maintaining its valued position in the Arts.  “The new Creative Arts building will allow CR to carry on its rich tradition of providing high quality studio and performing arts education for North Coast residents.”

The gymnasium building was constructed in 1971 and is a multi-story facility containing classrooms, locker rooms and a gym for a total of 38,226 square feet. The project to replace these facilities also includes a new field house building on the site of the old Community Stadium media boxes and bleachers. This project is expected to be completed in 2024.

Bob Brown, Director of Athletics, Kinesiology, Health & Physical Education is excited to have new facilities.  “The ability to move students into a modern and efficient facility will have a tremendous impact on student learning, accessibility and overall feel to the academic experience for all students at CR. It provides a major boost to the recruiting efforts of student athletes and increases the sense of pride in competing for CR athletic programs.  In addition it provides the community a new state of the art resource for community events.”

The Utility Infrastructure Replacement project (UIR) replaces much of the underground utilities throughout the Eureka Main Campus. Construction is expected to begin in spring of 2019 and be completed in June of 2020.

I am very happy that a local company, Wahlund Construction has been awarded the UIR contract as the prime contractor and is utilizing local subcontractors, including: Sequoia Construction, Maples Plumbing, Redwood Electric, O&M industries, McMurray & Sons, Hilfiker Pipes, Shasta Controls and Dan Brown CCS for the information technology work. The construction portion of the UIR project is valued at $27,920,000 and is 100% state funded.
