CR's September 9, 2022 Times Standard Article

Published on 9/7/2022.

As we continue to emerge from the pandemic, it is becoming clear that some things will remain forever changed; and while the past few years have been challenging, College of the Redwoods sees an opportunity to apply what we have learned to improving our institution. We have, for instance, expanded our online course offerings far beyond what was offered before the pandemic and have adjusted our work protocols to allow for more flexibility.

However, as you know, with any widespread change, there is a learning curve. Finding the optimal balance of online to in-person classes is challenging, as is predicting the needs of new industries and attempting to prepare students for the jobs the future will demand. Whether it’s advanced information corridors with terminal outlets in Humboldt Bay, the Promise Neighborhood grant to the Yurok Tribe that will allow improvements and expansions of educational systems in Del Norte, the arrival of the Nordic Aquaculture plant, or the transformation of Humboldt State University into a third polytechnic institution for the CSU system, we can already anticipate big changes to our community’s economic outlook.

With change in mind, we are continuing to rethink how we deliver educational services to our communities. The mentality of “if you build it, they will come” must be coupled with an understanding of why people might choose our institution, and how our offerings are relevant and valuable to them.

We need your help to achieve our vision. College of the Redwoods is asking residents 18-34 years of age, located in its 10,000 square mile service area, to complete an online survey. The CR Survey takes less than 10 minutes to complete and provides our community members an opportunity to express what is working and what is not at CR. Participation and responses from the survey results will help CR:

  • identify community perceptions toward CR as an institution.
  • assess the educational needs of the community.
  • gain feedback from potential students or those who influence the decisions of potential students (parents, grandparents).
  • gather information to assist the College in our decision making.

We will use the data drawn from the surveys to make CR a better institution. The survey is available online at bit.ly/cr_survey and is anonymous.

CR welcomes and appreciates any information from the survey that will help us improve higher education and assess the ways that it can change people’s lives. The survey is a great opportunity to voice opinions and suggestions for the good of the College, its students, and the local area. Please pass this info on to anyone who is interested in helping us better serve our community. We look forward to your feedback.
