In this session, Communication Studies Professor Lisa Sayles will introduce the paradigm of universal design (UD), UD applications, and how a UD approach differs from, and intersects with learning accommodations. In addition to informing the design of accessible spaces, and materials, UD is also employed a social justice framework with which to address issues of diversity, equality, and inclusivity. This session will conclude with an overview of the principles of Universal Design for Learning, one of the UD specializations that focuses on applying UD principles to practices and spaces associated with formal and informal learning.
