College of the Redwoods awarded for English course placement excellence

Published on 4/22/2022.

College of the Redwoods has been named a 2022 Champion for Excelling in Equitable Course Placement in Campuswide English Enrollment & Latinx English Enrollment by the Campaign for College Opportunity. College of the Redwoods successfully supported 100% of students to enroll directly into transfer level English coursework and supported 100% of Latinx students to enroll directly into transfer level English coursework.

“I am delighted to learn that the College has been recognized for its efforts; it takes a cross-campus team of innovative faculty, staff, counselors, and administrators to make meaningful change,” said Nicole Bryant Lescher, CR English Professor and Director of Student Success Pathways. “The real focus of our celebration, though, is our students. They demonstrate strong, college-level work in their courses and are persisting toward their goals and future careers.”

These achievements are directly related to state bill AB 705, which was signed by the Governor on October 13, 2017 that took effect on January 1, 2018. The bill is meant to ensure that students are not placed into remedial English courses that may delay or deter their educational progress, but are instead placed in college-level classes that count towards their degrees. Professor Bryant Lescher was instrumental in the implementation of AB705 at CR.

“As our College Mission states, ‘we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment that promotes and values diversity, equity, and inclusion among students, faculty and staff’,” said Bryant Lescher. “Our AB705 efforts are a visible example of our commitment to better support students and equity across our College.”
