Come explore the relationship between materials, form, technique, and firing. This class will include exploring the interactions of different clay bodies in wood kilns; learning how to choose an appropriate clay body; and a variety of throwing, hand building, and altering techniques to exploit the wonderful qualities of wood firing. Students will have abundant opportunities for investigation at all stages of the making process to explore ways to create forms that are best suited for wood firing. Students will fully participate in the loading and kiln firing process, under supervision*. This will include how to successfully load a wood kiln to produce the desired results. During the 30 hour firing process students will work in shifts so that they each have a chance to learn how the kiln firing works.

Anyone 16 or older is encouraged to enroll, but must have previous clay experience, either basic throwing or hand building skills.

*Students will need to:

  • Provide Leather Gloves;
  • Wear closed toed shoes;
  • Participate in the loading and unloading of wood and ceramics requiring heavy lifting and manual labor.

Creating Emotional Impact for your Stories, Novels, & Films

In this class we'll explore how to structure your story to create the emotional connection you want to make with your readers. Starting with thematic content, I'll walk you through the process of building multiple story lines and character arcs that all serve to prove your theme, and touch your reader's heart. This process works for everything from short stories, to novels, and films.

Learn essential Spanish for everyday conversation! Conversational Spanish is geared for people looking to develop some Spanish conversational skills in a quick and fun setting. This is a beginning level course where participants need little or no prior experience with Spanish.

Beginning workshops will cover the basics of mushroom identification, ecology of fungi, mushroom hunting, toxic mushrooms, and more. Field trips are an optional activity with either class. Humboldt Bay Mycological Society Mushroom Fair has been held annually since 1978. This year it will be held on Sunday, Nov 18 from 11am - 4pm at the Arcata Community Center, 321 Martin Luther King Parkway in Arcata. For more info: www.hhmycologicalsociety.org

Stained Glass

Instructor: Colleen Clifford

This 6-week course taught by experienced glass artist, Collen Clifford, will develop the techniques of cutting, grinding, foiling, soldering and framing your own stained glass art piece. Students will complete a 12" x 12" (or similar size) window hanging while learning the basic skills of the copper foil techniques for creating stained glass.
