Dauth, Flores place one-two for Redwoods

Published on 5/16/2018.

College of the Redwoods capped a memorable Nor-Cal finals in track and field by taking the top two spots in the men’s javelin at the NorCal Championships in Sacramento on Friday.

What was somewhat surprising, however, was the order of those top two.

Freshman Angelo Flores has dominated the opposition all season, setting a new school record in the event and posting the second best mark in the nation.

At the NorCals, however, it was his teammate J,W, Dauth who edged him for top spot with a mark of 196-8 on his final throw of the day.

“He stepped up and beat his buddy,” CR head coach Reed Elmore said. “And he did it with his last throw. It was pretty exciting.”

Flores threw a 189-6, well below his school record of 207.

CR’s Jasper Severn also had an impressive outing at the meet, placing third in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in a time of 10 minutes, 3.86 seconds, just six seconds behind the winner, Zach Connolly of Feather River.

CR will send four athletes this upcoming weekend to the California State Track & Field Championships. Nicholas Brichta for the 5000m, Angelo Flores in javelin, J.W. Dauth in javelin and discus and Jasper Severn in the steeplechase.
