What do you love most about teaching at CR?
Teaching at College of the Redwoods has been a dream come true. The area has fascinating geologic features as well as examples of geologic processes in action. Many of our students are attracted to this natural beauty and consequently they begin with an appreciation of the natural world that leads to engaging discussions and provides a platform for further learning.
Is there anything else you would like your students to know about you?
My Earth Science teaching hinges on personal mentoring, effective classroom activities, and field experiences. I enjoy interacting with students and helping them develop a more complete view of the natural sciences. I also strive to help my students develop and improve their critical thinking and communication skills. A scientist, or any professional, must be able to write in clear, understandable prose, as well as speak articulately and persuasively. These skills are highly sought after in the job market and they are equally important in the field.
Professor David Bazard has been teaching a variety of earth sciences courses at College of the Redwoods since 1995. David received his Bachelor's degree in Geology from Humboldt State University, worked for four years as a field geophysicist and lab manager, and then later earned a Master of Science in Geology from Western Washington University and a Ph. D. in Geosciences from University of Arizona. His graduate work and subsequent research focused on using the magnetism of rocks as evidence of the past positions of tectonic plates. His research was the subject of several journal articles and presentations at national and international conferences. His current activities are almost exclusively directed toward developing classroom exercises and designing field-based projects for his students. He strives to provide relevant earth science education that is delivered in a variety of modes and that appeals to our diverse student population. David says, "I feel that education happens when students are respected, feel empowered, and realize a connection between classroom activities and real world experiences. To accomplish this, I have worked to provide active learning in the form of field trips and investigations of local issues."
