REDDING – The College of the Redwoods men’s soccer team came close to pulling off its first win in more than four years on Friday, but still managed a 2-2 tie at Shasta. There is still cause to celebrate, however, as it was the squad’s first tie since budget cuts temporarily halted the program in 2011.
A mistake in the defensive field led to a Shasta goal in the first minute of the game. However, CR (0-6-1 overall, 0-4-1 Golden Valley Conference) responded in the 25th minute when Esteban Osorio scored after a nice run through the middle and assist from Francisco Colderon. Redwoods led 2-1 on a successful penalty kick early in the second half by Colderon, but the team couldn’t hold the lead.
Domick Kutzke had 6 saves and Redwoods outshot Shasta 10-6. The Corsairs will travel to Lassen on Friday for a 2 p.m. game, then will host Butte on Friday, Oct. 30 at 2 p.m.
