College of the Redwoods presents Visiting Artist HP Bloomer IV
College of the Redwoods will present a visiting artist lecture and demonstration by HP Bloomer IV on Wednesday, April 12 from 11:30 to 3:00 p.m. and Thursday April 13 from 11:30 to 6:00 p.m. All events will take place in CA 136.

The demonstrations on April 12 will feature HP’s process of making thrown and altered vessels specifically to be fired in the College of the Redwoods soda kiln. Bloomer’s forms pays special attention to ceramic history as well as what is happening in contemporary painting, design, and textiles.

On April 13, Bloomer will introduce source material and the development of his personal vocabulary articulated in glazed pattern. Through demonstrations, HP will go over the various surface development techniques used to finish his utilitarian pottery. These methods rely on experience with glaze design, glaze application, brushwork, historical pattern, and various masking methods. The artist will give a lecture about his artistic trajectory and influences on April 13 from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. in room CA 136.

HP Bloomer IV was raised in central Texas. In graduate school his work began pulling from his experiences being raised by a family active in the arts. His father was an architect and painter and his mother was a potter and educator who ran the studio department of the local art center. Upon completing his MFA in 2011 he moved to Colorado for a residency at the Carbondale Clay Center. During these two years, 2011-2013, he served as a studio technician at CCC while maintaining positions at Colorado Mountain College, the Aspen Art Museum, and the Harvey Meadows/Artstream Gallery. He has since been an Artist in Residence at the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Tennessee (2013-2014), Studio Manager at Santa Fe Clay (2014-2016) and is currently an Artist in Residence at Cobb Mountain Art and Ecology Project and Adjunct Faculty at Mendocino College in Ukiah. He has had work published in Lark’s 500 Teapots and Ceramics Monthly, Studio Potter and continues to exhibit his work around the country. His artwork can be found at Eutectic Gallery in Portland, Lillstreet Gallery in Chicago, Anderson Ranch Art Center in Snowmass Village Colorado, Santa Fe Clay in Santa Fe, The Lions Nest Gallery in Austin, and at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg.
