CR professor awarded distinguished scholarship award

College of the Redwoods professor of Psychology and Sociology Philip Mancus was awarded the Distinguished Scholarship award from the American Sociological Association.  Philip teaches at the CR Del Norte campus in Crescent City.

 

Philip’s paper “The Invisible Animal: Anthropology and Macrosociology” has been awarded this year’s distinguished scholarship award from the American Sociological Association’s new section on Animals and Society. The paper was co-authored with Professor Richard York, University of Oregon. It was published in the journal Sociological Theory.

 

The award will be presented at the American Sociological Association’s annual conference in Chicago on August 24, 2015.

 

According to the ASA website, the purpose of the Section on Animals and Society is to encourage and support the development of theory, research and teaching about the complex relationships that exist between humans and other animals. In the process, it is anticipated that the light we shed on these issues will increase the well-being of both humans, and other animals.

 

“We are proud of Dr. Mancus and are very fortunate to have him on the faculty” said CR President Keith Snow-Flamer. “Philip is a wonderful example of the type of faculty we have teaching our students. He's a strong academician with a profound commitment to the success of his students.”
