Redwoods Football Schedule features 5 home games, Borba’s first season at helm

College of the Redwoods new head football coach Frank Borba will lead the Corsairs into their first contest on September 5 facing off with Monterey Peninsula College in a home game at Community Stadium. Monterey competes in the Golden Coast Conference in which they finished the 2014 season with a 4-6 overall record. Borba, who was Redwoods offensive coordinator last season, is looking forward to retaining the momentum of the 2014 campaign.

“We should have a tremendous core of returners from last year. Last season we finished with a 3-7 record but only had a handful of returning players on which to build a foundation. We had great turnout of returners and high enthusiasm at our spring of workouts and spring ball. This should provide us with a solid base to build around this season”.

The schedule also features a “Salute to the Military Day” at the September 19 home game with Cabrillo College. “Honoring our Veterans and our current military is important, not only to the college, but to our program where we focus on the some of the values we share with the military: dignity, hard-work, integrity and teamwork” said Borba.

The first conference game is with traditional rival Shasta College at Community Stadium on September 26 at 2:00pm. Shasta is coming off a second-place finish in the PAC-7 with a 5-1 conference record and a berth in the North State Bowl.
Another highlight of the season will be the “Homecoming/Hall of Fame” game scheduled for October 17 against San Jose City College. The game will feature the halftime induction into the CR Hall of Fame of Redwoods 1975 football team which won a Golden Valley Conference title as well as the Northern California Championship.

A big road challenge for the Corsairs will be their matchup with traditional power Contra Costa College on October 31 in San Pablo. Contra Costa is the reigning PAC-7 champions and is coming off a victory over Hartnell College in last season’s ‘Living Breath Bowl’.

“We are a month away from the start of practice (August 13) and everyone is excited to get started. We’re looking forward to an exciting season and our continued goal of bringing our program back to prominence”, said Borba.
