Congratulations Susan Gehr!

Published on 4/5/2019.

College of the Redwoods faculty continually earn local and national professional distinction for their achievement. It is my honor to share with you that Susan Gehr has been selected to give the keynote address at the Multi-Disciplinary Information Research Symposium (MIRS) later this month at the University of North Texas.  The research presented at MIRS includes information technology, cybersecurity, information organization, archival theory, library science, computer science, linguistics, and data science.  This year, the theme of the symposium is conntected to the UN declaration of 2019 as the International Year of Indigenous Languages.

Susan's keynote address is titled “I’ll Do It Myself!” and Other Strategies in Karuk Language Documentation and Revitalization. You can see more information at https://mirs.unt.edu/keynote-2019. Take a look at her research guide on Multicultural USA: Native Americans and see how Susan brings all of this to bear on her service to our students.

Let me share a little about Susan. She has an Master of Arts in Linguistics, as well as a Master in Library and Informational Science and has played a significant role in the documentation and revitalization of the Karuk language. She co-published the Karuk Dictionary with linguist William Bright. She’s also the PI for the Karuk Archives and Accessibility Project, funded by the NSF’s Documenting Endangered Languages grant, and a co-convener of the Institute for Collaborative Language Research (CoLang).

Susan's achievement is another example that CR faculty are the best in the California Community College System.
